The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23
I’ll be honest, I’m not a morning person. When I was in college, my boyfriend (now husband) called me 15 minutes before my alarm went off to wish me good luck on a test. Let’s just say, that was the last time he woke me up.
Although, I don’t love mornings, I do love the freshness of a brand-new day. With each day, comes new opportunities, a fresh perspective, and the chance to do things differently than I did the day before.
Just like a new day, the mercies of the Lord are fresh and new every morning. No matter what we have done, and no matter how many times we have messed up, he continues to love us and forgive us! It is so freeing to know that we don’t have to be perfect!!
There are many times after a long, hard day that I lay down at night with many regrets from the day running through my mind. Why did I scream at my kids over something so silly? Why did I say that horrible thing to my husband? Why was I such a space cadet in that work meeting today? When my head hits the pillow, I find myself wishing for a do-over. But then I am reminded of Lamentations 3:22-23. The Lords mercies are new EVERY morning. His love for me NEVER changes! And his faithfulness is GREAT!! I can have a do-over after all!
God isn’t looking for perfection. He knows that we are going to mess up, and mess up again. If we were perfect, there would have been no reason to send his son. But because of Jesus, we can rest assured that we are forgiven, and we are free to make mistakes. And when we do make mistakes, he loves us just the same!
Wake up each day with a fresh perspective. Look at is as a new opportunity to love others, to chase your dreams, to ask for forgiveness for yesterdays mistakes, and to extend forgiveness to those who hurt you. And don’t forget to give yourself grace to mess up. When you fail (and you will), you fall into the loving arms of your father who says, “I love you, I know your heart, and tomorrow is a new day.”
Dear Lord, thank you for your fresh mercies. Thank you for your forgiveness and love! Help me face each new day with the courage and strength that comes from resting in your faithfulness and goodness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
