He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He refreshes my soul. Psalm 23:2-3
My life, like so many others, had come to a screeching halt. I was just 2 weeks into the mandatory shutdowns of Covid 19. No more work, or kids practices to run to. All school activities were canceled. My schedule was suddenly wide open and I didn’t know how to react. In many ways it felt like a much needed break but in other ways it was scary and very strange.
In the middle of my daily workout, the Lord fixed my eyes on the artwork hanging on my wall, specifically the words “He makes me lie down in green pastures.” With my eyes fixed on those words, they welled up with tears as it occurred to me how good God is to “make me lie down”.
I don’t know about you, but I am constantly going. Constantly doing. I don’t take the time to just stop and rest. But God knows when I need to rest and on occasion He has to “make” me lie down.
It’s amazing how the busyness of life can rob us of so much joy. We miss our child’s precious laugh as we rush them off to school. We miss the opportunity to encourage someone at work because we are hurrying off to another meeting. We don’t take the time to read God’s word because we are just too tired.
What if God is giving us this time to slow down and open our eyes to those around us? What if He is giving us an opportunity to get to know Him better? There is nothing more refreshing to the soul than just being in the presence of our savior.
I encourage you to allow him to “make you lie down” and “refresh your soul” during this season.
Dear Lord, this time is so strange and the unknown is very scary. But I can feel you calling us to come and just rest at your feet. Speak the words that our hearts need to hear. Open our eyes to those around us. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to rest and be refreshed. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
