“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven” - Ecclesiastes 3:1
We all go through seasons in our life. Seasons of joy, seasons of grief, seasons of waiting, and seasons of change. The seasons of joy are certainly my favorite! As I look back on the different seasons that I have experienced, I realize some really amazing things about how good God is even in the midst of difficult seasons.
I never faced a difficult season alone
Psalm 34:18 says that the Lord is close to the brokenhearted. As I look back at the most heartbreaking times of my life, I see that this is so true! When I didn’t think I even had the strength to make it out of bed, his presence is what got me through my day. When I didn’t know the words to pray, he would remind me that the Holy Spirit prays for me with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. Romans 8:26
Every season has a purpose
It’s so easy to wonder what in the world God is doing in the midst of a difficult season or in a season of waiting. Even if we can’t see the end we do know that God never stops working. In John 5:17 Jesus said “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.” Just as God turns winter into Spring, I have watched as God has turned what seemed hopeless, dead, and broken in my own life into something beautiful. As I look back, I can see how every season, both good and bad, had a purpose. Sure, there are some things that I won’t understand on this side of heaven but I can rest in knowing the goodness of God.
If the season doesn’t change we won’t change
It is not during the easy seasons of our life that we are changed, it is during the most difficult. God has used the trials in my life to strengthen me and prepare me for difficulties that lie ahead. He has used the difficult seasons to soften my heart for others who are experiencing heartache. It is in the furnace of suffering that we are refined. Isaiah 48:10 As I look back at the difficult seasons in my life I can certainly say that I would never want to face them again, but I can also say that I am thankful that I did face them because of the way that God has changed me through them.
Sometimes God has to move us
Have you ever been in a position in your life where if God hadn’t moved you out of it, you would still be there today? Maybe it was a relationship, or a job, or a city. Oftentimes God brings about new seasons in our life to move us out of a season that we don’t belong in. It can seem painful at the time but it is always for our good.
If you are facing a difficult season right now, look back at the seasons that you have walked through in the past. Remember God’s goodness in each one of those seasons. Remember how he brought you through each one. Remember how you are stronger now than you were then. Remember that he is holding you, he will carry you, and he will strengthen you. Isaiah 41:10
Dear Lord, thank you for your goodness in each season of life. Even if I can’t see how you could possibly use my current season for good, I will choose to trust you when you say that you work all things together for the good of those who love you, who have been called according to your purpose. Please lead me and strengthen me through this season. Remind me of your faithfulness in past seasons and let it serve as confidence that I will see you work again! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
