They cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. - Psalm 107:28-29
Living in the South, I experience many thunderstorms. There isn’t much that is more relaxing than listening to the sound of the rain and the gentle rolling thunder. But unfortunately, every storm is not quite so relaxing. Many bring loud, earth shaking booms, strong winds, and tornadoes. Thunderstorms are a lot like the storms that we face in our life. Some are bumpy but manageable and others leave us wondering if we will make it through.
When I find myself facing a storm in my life, my first instinct tends to be to try to find a way to fix it. I spend hours on Google, go to every person I know for advice, and spend countless sleepless nights trying to find the perfect solution. It’s funny how those efforts usually make the situation much worse. Why am I so quick to forget that my Father in heaven can calm the storm?
In Mark 4:35-41 while in a boat, Jesus and the disciples found themselves in the middle of a terrible storm. The disciples were very fearful. But not Jesus, he was asleep! The disciples woke Jesus up and said “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” Jesus then rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!”. The wind stopped and it became completely calm.
How was Jesus able to sleep through the storm? Because he knew who he was. He understood that he would make it through the storm. If the disciples had remembered who was on the boat with them, they would not have been fearful either. When your foundation is so firmly rooted in knowing that you are in the hands of the God who silences the wind and quiets the storm, you are able to face any storm with confidence and peace.
Thinking through the storms that I have faced throughout my life, some the Lord has immediately stopped but most he has not. Most storms I have had to walk through. In each of those storms, I have learned that even though he may not stop the storm, he always calms it.
God is faithful to calm the storm:
- When we take our concerns to him, he gives us supernatural peace (Phillipians 4:6)
- We never walk through a storm alone (Deuteronomy 31:8)
- Nothing is a surprise to God (Psalm 139)
- We should not worry about tomorrow because he will give us the grace and strength for each day (Matthew 6:34)
The next time you face a storm, and you will, remember the power that you have at your disposal. You know the One who can silence the storm, calm the wind, and stop the waves. Take your fears, and hurts to Him. He is so faithful!
Dear Lord, help me to remember that you are more than able to calm the storms that I am facing. Thank you that I can come to you at any time and that you are faithful to meet me right where I am. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
